If you’ve ever left a doctor’s appointment feeling rushed, unheard, or like you were just handed a prescription without real answers, you’re not alone.

I started AshCare Functional Medicine because I believe healthcare should be personal, empowering, and focused on finding real solutions, not just managing symptoms. After years of working in traditional medical settings, I saw the same pattern over and over again: people came in with complex concerns and left with a 10-minute visit and a one-size-fits-all plan.

That wasn’t enough for me, and it’s definitely not enough for my patients.

At AshCare, we do things differently. Whether you’re dealing with fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalance, gut issues, or just want to feel like yourself again, my team and I are here to dig deeper and treat the root cause.

Let me walk you through the three key ways our approach sets us apart.

1. We Give You Time—Because You Deserve It

Most traditional doctor’s visits last about 10–15 minutes. By the time you’ve gone over your concerns, there’s barely enough time left for questions, let alone for a meaningful conversation about your lifestyle, lab results, or long-term health goals.

At AshCare, our appointments are longer on purpose. Your first visit is 60 to 90 minutes, and follow-ups are usually 30 to 45. Why? Because your health story is complex, and it takes time to unpack.

We ask about your sleep, your stress levels, your diet, your digestion, your family history, your environment, and even your mindset. We review your labs together, in plain English. You won’t be rushed, interrupted, or made to feel like a checklist.

Instead, you’ll feel heard, respected, and involved in every decision we make. That’s how healing begins, not with a prescription pad, but with a real conversation.

2. We Blend Modern Medicine with Herbal & Holistic Tools

Yes, I’m a licensed physician. I’ve prescribed antibiotics, written referrals, and interpreted diagnostic scans. I value everything that modern medicine has to offer.

But I’m also trained in functional medicine and herbal therapies, and I believe that nature often gives us powerful tools that work with the body, not just against symptoms.

At AshCare, we use a blended approach. That means we may recommend traditional treatments when necessary, but we also explore:

Herbal remedies for inflammation, stress, or hormone support

Nutrition plans tailored to your metabolism and gut health

Supplements backed by science and chosen specifically for your body

Lifestyle strategies to support your nervous system, sleep, and energy

We don’t throw pills at problems. We get curious. We ask why your symptoms are happening and what your body needs to come back into balance. And we tailor every recommendation to your personal story.

3. We Focus on Relationships, Not Just Results

Let’s be honest, some healthcare experiences feel cold and transactional. You check in, wait 30 minutes, talk to someone for 10, and then get a prescription and a bill.

That’s not what we do here.

AshCare was built on the idea that relationships are at the heart of healing. You’re not just a patient, you’re a person. And your care should reflect that.

That’s why we:

Build long-term partnerships, not just one-off visits

Offer direct communication between appointments so you’re never left in the dark

Celebrate your wins, big and small from better sleep to lab improvements

Support you emotionally, not just physically, as you go through life’s ups and downs

We also know that healing isn’t always linear. Some weeks are harder than others. Sometimes you try something and it doesn’t work. We’re here for all of it with empathy, encouragement, and a plan B if needed.

Why This Matters—Especially Now

More people than ever are burnt out, overwhelmed, and feeling disconnected from their bodies. They’re told everything looks “normal,” but they still don’t feel well. They’re tired of waiting months for answers, tired of feeling dismissed, and tired of being treated like a number.

I hear you, and that’s exactly why I created AshCare.

Our approach isn’t about trends or quick fixes. It’s about root cause medicine, thoughtful support, and building lasting wellness together.

So if you’ve been searching for something more: more answers, more time, more compassion, I invite you to experience the AshCare difference. You deserve a care team that listens deeply, thinks holistically, and believes your health is worth the time it takes to truly heal.

Let me tell you something that surprises a lot of my patients: when you come into my office complaining about fatigue, anxiety, skin issues, weight gain, or even trouble focusing, I’m often thinking about your gut.

That’s right. Your gut.

As a physician trained in both conventional and holistic medicine, I’ve learned that gut health is one of the most powerful yet overlooked foundations of wellness. Most of us think about digestion as something simple: eat food, break it down, and eliminate the waste. But the truth is, your gut does so much more.

Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, and they’re working around the clock to support your immune system, regulate inflammation, produce mood-stabilizing chemicals, and even influence your weight.

If your gut is out of balance, it can impact nearly every aspect of your health. Let’s dive into what that really means, and what you can do to support it.

Your Second Brain: The Gut-Brain Connection

Have you ever felt “butterflies in your stomach” before a big event? Or had a stomachache during a stressful day? That’s not a coincidence. Your gut and your brain are in constant communication via a network of nerves, hormones, and signaling molecules. We call it the gut-brain axis.

In fact, about 90% of your body’s serotonin, the “feel-good” chemical, is produced in the gut, not the brain. When your gut bacteria are imbalanced, it can throw off serotonin levels, leading to mood swings, anxiety, or even depression.

I’ve seen patients who struggled with mental health for years, and while therapy and medication helped, things didn’t fully improve until we supported their gut health. Once we addressed underlying imbalances like inflammation, poor diet, and disrupted gut flora, they began to feel more stable, energized, and focused.

Immunity Starts in the Gut

Did you know that around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut? That means your gut is your first line of defense, not just against foodborne pathogens, but against viruses, bacteria, and chronic inflammation.

When your gut lining is healthy and your microbiome is diverse, your immune system stays in balance. But when that lining becomes “leaky” (a condition known as intestinal permeability), toxins and undigested food particles can sneak into your bloodstream and trigger inflammation.

This can lead to food sensitivities, autoimmune conditions, or a general feeling of always being rundown. I’ve had patients with recurrent infections or chronic inflammation begin to bounce back simply by repairing their gut.

The Microbiome and Weight

Weight struggles aren’t always about willpower—they’re often rooted in biology. Your gut bacteria play a huge role in how you metabolize food, store fat, and regulate hunger.

Some types of bacteria are more efficient at extracting calories from food, while others help produce hormones like leptin and ghrelin that control appetite. If your gut microbiome is off, you may feel hungrier more often, crave sugar, or struggle to lose weight even with a clean diet.

Balancing the microbiome can help reset these systems and support sustainable weight loss, not through restriction, but by working with your body instead of against it.

Signs Your Gut Might Be Out of Balance

Here are a few common signs I look for that may point to gut health issues:

Bloating, gas, or irregular bowel movements

Chronic fatigue

Skin problems like eczema or acne

Brain fog

Frequent illnesses or weak immune response

Food cravings or intolerances

Mood issues like anxiety or depression

If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s worth taking a closer look at your gut.

Dr. Ash’s Gut Health Essentials

The good news? You don’t need an expensive detox or an endless list of supplements to get your gut back on track. Here are the core habits I recommend to almost every patient:

1. Feed Your Microbiome

Your good gut bacteria thrive on fiber-rich foods—think fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These act as “prebiotics,” or fuel for healthy bacteria.

2. Add Fermented Foods

Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and kombucha are packed with probiotics—live bacteria that help diversify your gut microbiome.

3. Reduce Sugar and Processed Foods

Sugar feeds harmful bacteria and yeast in the gut. Processed foods are often stripped of fiber and nutrients. Stick to whole, minimally processed foods as much as possible.

4. Manage Stress

Chronic stress directly impacts the gut lining and microbiome. Practice stress reduction techniques like walking, meditation, deep breathing, or journaling. Your gut will thank you.

5. Sleep Well

Good sleep supports a healthy gut, and poor sleep does the opposite. Aim for 7–8 hours of high-quality sleep per night to keep everything in sync.

6. Use Antibiotics Carefully

Antibiotics can be life-saving, but they also wipe out both good and bad bacteria. If you need them, be sure to follow up with probiotic-rich foods or supplements to help repopulate your gut.

Your Gut Is Talking—Are You Listening?

I often tell patients, “When in doubt, start with the gut.” Whether you’re dealing with stubborn symptoms or just want to feel more vibrant and resilient, your gut is the place to begin.

Total wellness doesn’t come in a single pill or one-size-fits-all plan. It comes from understanding your body and supporting its systems from the inside out, and your gut is the foundation of that work.

If you’re ready to start healing your gut and unlocking better energy, mood, and overall health, don’t ignore the signs. The path to true wellness starts right in your belly.

As a doctor and a parent, I’ve seen firsthand how chaotic family life can be—and how quickly wellness can fall off the radar. Between school, work, sports, errands, and the thousand other things on your plate, it’s easy to go into survival mode. But the truth is, true health doesn’t have to be complicated or out of reach. It just takes a shift in how we think about prevention and daily habits.

That’s where functional medicine comes in. Unlike conventional approaches that often focus on treating symptoms, functional medicine looks at the root causes of illness and works to create balance across the whole body. Even better? It’s incredibly effective for families. When we support the body’s natural systems and teach our kids these principles early, we create a home environment where wellness becomes the norm—not the exception.

Here’s how I guide families who want to feel better, stay energized, and build healthy habits that actually stick.

Start with Food—Every Day, Every Body

I say this all the time: Food is information. It tells your body what to do. It’s not just calories or carbs—it’s fuel that impacts mood, energy, immunity, focus, and sleep. And this is true for everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Functional medicine focuses on anti-inflammatory, whole-food eating. That means meals rich in:

Fresh fruits and vegetables (think color and variety)

Clean proteins like chicken, turkey, beans, and fish

Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, and seeds

Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats

Try building your meals around these basics, and make it a family affair. Let kids help choose vegetables or stir a soup. Create a build-your-own taco night or smoothie bar. The goal isn’t to follow a rigid “health” plan—it’s to make real food normal food in your house.

Prioritize Sleep for Everyone (Yes, Even You)

Sleep is where healing happens. It’s the reset button for the body and brain. Yet, sleep is often the first thing to go when life gets busy—and we assume kids “bounce back” from poor sleep. Not true.

Sleep supports:

Immune health

Growth and development

Emotional regulation

Weight balance

Mental clarity

In our house, we treat sleep like a sacred ritual. Everyone has a wind-down routine, screens go off at least 30 minutes before bed, and we try to keep the same bedtime even on weekends. Parents—this applies to you too. If you’re burned out and wired at night, your kids will feel that energy. Modeling healthy rest is one of the most powerful lessons you can teach.

Create a Movement Culture, Not Just “Exercise” Time

I’m a big fan of sports and fitness, but functional health means getting the whole family moving regularly—not just the athlete in the house.

Movement improves:

Circulation and detoxification

Emotional well-being

Focus and learning in kids

Gut health and digestion

You don’t need a gym membership to build a movement culture. Walk the dog as a family. Turn on music and have a dance break before homework. Do a Sunday stretch session or hike on the weekend. The key is consistency and fun. Moving your body shouldn’t feel like punishment—it should feel like life.

Manage Stress (and Teach Your Kids How To, Too)

Stress isn’t just a mental thing. Chronic stress wears down the immune system, disrupts hormones, contributes to weight gain, and impacts sleep. And in our fast-paced world, even young kids aren’t immune.

Functional medicine sees stress as a core trigger behind many health issues—and helps families build practical tools to calm the nervous system.

In my practice, I recommend:

Breathwork before meals or bedtime

Gratitude journaling for older kids and teens

Family walks to debrief after long days

Technology breaks to reset overstimulated brains

Stress will happen. But when we create daily moments of calm, we give our bodies and minds space to reset—and we teach our kids that it’s normal to take care of their mental health.

Support Gut Health, the Root of It All

The gut is the command center of health. It impacts digestion, immunity, skin, mood, and more. And modern life—processed foods, antibiotics, and high stress—can throw it off balance quickly.

To protect gut health:

Eat fiber-rich, whole foods

Include fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or kimchi

Drink plenty of water

Avoid excess sugar and ultra-processed snacks

Use antibiotics wisely and only when truly needed

If your child has frequent tummy aches, skin rashes, or even mood swings, it’s worth looking at their gut health. A functional medicine approach can help you dig deeper and restore balance from the inside out.

Make Prevention the Family Goal

Functional medicine is about building health—not just avoiding disease. That’s why I encourage families to shift from a “fix it when it’s broken” mindset to a daily tune-up approach. You don’t have to wait for someone to get sick to make changes.

You can start today by:

Adding one extra veggie to the dinner table

Swapping out sugary drinks for water or herbal tea

Turning off screens 30 minutes before bed

Going for a walk together after dinner

Talking about feelings openly, without judgment

Wellness doesn’t happen overnight—but it does happen when the whole family is on board and committed to small, steady improvements.

Wellness Is a Team Sport

As a doctor, I can give you guidance. But as a parent, I know the real work happens at home—in the little choices you make every day. Don’t aim for perfect. Aim for present. The goal isn’t to raise perfect eaters or stress-free kids. The goal is to create a home where health is valued, talked about, and practiced together. When we treat our bodies with respect, when we understand that every symptom has a story, and when we support each other with love and intention, healing becomes a family journey. And that’s where the real transformation begins.

When patients join the 7 Days of Weight & Wellness program, most expect we’ll talk about food, fitness, and maybe even metabolism. And we do. But what often surprises them is how much time I spend discussing three things that don’t seem directly related to weight: stress, sleep, and sugar. These hidden triggers are some of the biggest barriers to long-term wellness—and some of the most overlooked.

Let’s pull back the curtain on how your mind, habits, and hormones are all working behind the scenes. Because no matter how many healthy meals you prep or workouts you do, if these three areas are out of balance, your body will struggle to release weight and feel truly well.

Stress: The Silent Weight Gainer

We tend to think of stress as a mental or emotional issue. But the truth is, your body treats stress like a full-body event. When you’re overwhelmed—whether it’s by deadlines, finances, relationships, or just the daily grind—your body releases cortisol, a hormone designed to help you survive short-term danger.

The problem? Most of us are under chronic stress. That means cortisol levels stay elevated, and that has several weight-related consequences:

Increased fat storage, especially around the belly

Stronger cravings, especially for high-sugar and high-fat foods

Slower metabolism, as your body goes into “preservation” mode

Stress also makes it harder to stay motivated. When you’re anxious or exhausted, you’re more likely to skip that workout or reach for comfort food. And over time, this creates a cycle that’s hard to break.

What I tell my patients: You don’t need to eliminate stress (that’s not realistic), but you do need to build in daily recovery. Whether that’s a walk, meditation, journaling, or simply five deep breaths between meetings, calming your nervous system is part of your wellness work. I even recommend setting a “stress check-in” alarm on your phone—a little reminder to pause, unclench your jaw, and breathe.

Sleep: Your Metabolism’s Best Friend

If I could give every patient just one superpower for weight loss, it wouldn’t be a special diet—it would be better sleep. Sleep isn’t just rest; it’s repair. It’s when your body resets your hormones, cleans up inflammation, and balances the systems that regulate hunger and metabolism.

When you don’t sleep well (or long enough), here’s what happens:

Your body produces more ghrelin, the hormone that makes you feel hungry

You make less leptin, the hormone that tells you you’re full

Insulin sensitivity drops, which means your body stores more fat

You crave more sugar and caffeine the next day just to stay awake

It’s no surprise that studies consistently show a strong link between sleep deprivation and weight gain.

What I tell my patients: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep a night. That means winding down without screens, keeping your bedroom cool and dark, and sticking to a sleep schedule—even on weekends. Think of sleep as part of your nutrition plan. It’s that important.

Sugar: The Sneaky Saboteur

Let’s talk about sugar. It’s not evil, and I don’t believe in fear-based food rules. But I do believe that most of us are eating far more sugar than we realize—and it’s quietly hijacking our progress.

Sugar triggers dopamine, the brain’s reward chemical, which is why it feels so good to eat. The problem is that sugar doesn’t satisfy us—it makes us want more. And added sugar hides in more than just desserts. It’s in sauces, breads, dressings, yogurts, and even so-called “health” foods.

High sugar intake:

Spikes insulin, your fat-storage hormone

Increases inflammation, which slows metabolism

Creates energy crashes that lead to more cravings

Disrupts gut health, making it harder to regulate hunger

What I tell my patients: You don’t need to eliminate sugar completely. But you do need to become aware of it. Start reading labels. Choose foods with less than 5g of added sugar per serving. And if you’re craving something sweet, try fruit, which comes with fiber and nutrients that support your health.

The Mind-Body Connection

Here’s the bottom line: your body doesn’t exist in a vacuum. What you feel emotionally impacts what happens hormonally. And what’s happening hormonally affects how you eat, sleep, move, and feel.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated because “you’re doing everything right” but the scale isn’t budging, I encourage you to look beyond food and exercise. Are you overwhelmed? Are you sleeping well? Are you caught in a cycle of sugar highs and crashes?

Healing isn’t about perfection—it’s about alignment. Aligning your habits with how your body actually works. That’s what this program is about: not just quick fixes, but sustainable changes that support real wellness.

What You Can Do This Week

As you move through the 7 Days of Weight & Wellness, here are a few small changes I recommend:

Schedule 10 minutes of stress relief every day, no screens

Set a consistent bedtime and wake time

Swap out one processed snack for a whole food alternative

Keep a simple journal to track mood, cravings, and sleep

These aren’t dramatic changes—but they’re powerful. Because when stress goes down, sleep goes up, and sugar comes under control, your body begins to trust you again. And when your body trusts you, it lets go of what it’s been holding on to—physically and emotionally.

Let’s focus on those deeper shifts. Not just for weight loss, but for long-term wellness. You’ve got this—and I’m here to help guide you through it.
